A very high-quality late 19th-century oak crossbanded extending Dining Table made by the celebrated firm, J A S Shoolbred of Tottenham Court Road, London. The table is 166 inches long max 49 wide and 30 high and with five leaves it can be configured to many different lengths. Standing on five superbly carved turned legs and very large brass castors. The twin screw Fitter telescopic mechanism operates the sliding substantial mahogany rails.
Jas. Shoolbread is considered one of the foremost cabinetmakers of their time and had large retail showrooms in Tottenham Court Road in London from about 1820. Beginning as drapers and upholsterers they began making their own range of up-market furniture in the 1870's. They were hugely successful and continued in business until the 1930's.
